We've Never Had It So Bad...?

Was it the recent Russian aggression? Was it the excitement about the upcoming London Olympics? Was it the plummeting pound and rising inflation? With all these events occurring in 1948 is Chancellor Darling to be forgiven for sharing the details of his flashback with us?

The worst economic conditions for "60 years"? Thanks Alistair. That's put a spring in everybody's step. And who said leadership was about, erm, leading? Why lead when you can share your kami kazi thoughts with the great unwashed.

He'd make a good pilot wouldn't he...

"Welcome aboard New Labour airlines ladies and gentlemen, or Brown Air as we call it these days. We are currently cruising at an altitude of 20,000 feet but in an effort to cut the current account deficit we have only half filled the tanks... And my wife's leaving me... AND MY CHILDREN DON'T WANT TO KNOW ME..." Neeeeeeeeeeeeee-wwwwwwwwwwwww! And all the rest.

Take it from somebody who's run a company, their own company: when things are at the darkest, when prospects look bleakest, get your troops together and tell them how things really are: "Fantastic - the world's our oyster!" Glumness won't rally the troops, will it(?) Get them whistling. Just as Darling ought to be getting us doing our best Colonel Bogey.

We know it's bad. If you didn't read the papers the local gossip with friends not being able to buy, buyers slashing their prices at the 11th minute of the 11th hours, tells us everything. But spare us the depression, especially a Great one.

The good thing that might come of this is that the government might stop taking credit for the economy. If it won't take the blame for the state of the markets now it can't (reasonably) take the credit for the NICE decade before. Of course, that won't stop them, but the saner amongst us will know.

Maybe one day an economist will show that modern governments have little impact on the economy and that things are cyclical and "government intervention" is almost an illusion. Until then we can depend on Darling, the Prophet of Doom, and his stunning lack of solutions.
