The Dow is shorthand for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Informally known as the Dow Jones, or just plain Wall Street, the Dow is an index of 30 of the largest public companies in the United States of America.
Interestingly, these are not the 30 largest companies by market capitalisation but the leading company from their sectors - as selected by the editors of the Wall Street Journal. (You can bet they get their phonecalls returned.) Also, the Dow 30 companies are drawn from a number of exchanges, including the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.
The Wall Street Journal was founded by Charles Dow who, apart from starting one of the world's most respected financial publications (how could he know Rupert Murdoch was going to buy it?) also formulated the Dow Theory - as well as contributing to the birth of technical analysis. Like all the best entrepreneurs Charles Dow didn't finish high school.
